Get Your House in Shape for Fall to Prevent Property Damage

The potential for water damage, storm damage and fire damage can increase during the fall, and Paul Davis Restoration of the Northland wants to help you defend your home. We’ve put together a list of ideas that can help you avoid costly property damage in the coming months.

Keep things dry. Check caulking near exterior doors and windows and repair anywhere you see damage. If there are gaps in places where pipes or wiring enter the home, these should be caulked as well. Excluding water from these spaces can prevent mold formation and water damage.

· Prevent damage to your roof. Inspect your property for tree branches, especially any that overhang the roof. If they’re above the first story of your home, they should be removed by a professional.

· If your house has a wood-burning fireplace, have the chimney and firebox inspected before you put it to use this season. Burning wood can create a buildup of creosote, which can cause a serious chimney fire if not kept in check.

· If you have missing shingles or other damage on your roof, have repairs made promptly. We recommend taking a preliminary look using binoculars, and contact an experience roofing contractor when repairs are needed. Not repairing a leaking roof can lead to structural problems and other major issues down the road.
